DIESEL FORUMS : Perkins:Perama Series  Black smoke under heavy load

Originator: Slavek Guest Guest Date:  15 July, 2009 - 05:46 PM
I bought sailboat Baba 30 ( 12 500 lbs) with Perkins engine Perama M30, transmission ( just rebuided Hutrh 125) with ratio Frwd-2.14, Rev 1.95, Propeller -Left hand size 15 x 13-47 ( this is from previous owner notes so I do not know which is diameter and which is pitch).
I have problems with:

1.Air getting in fuel system- after abvout 1/2 housr angine would stop.I have checked all possible connections and while connected clear hose to return line from injectors to tank i have still microscopic air bubbles. After bleading engine works now fine for 2 hours or longer- I shut it off last time after 2 hours - looks like is fine now, but next day I have to bleed system again to start. Notes- glow plugs work. Diesel fuel I have in tank is 2 years old ( I pump it out and filter fuel, clean tank and put old fuel back - is this can be oxidated to point will cause this problem?
2. When testing engine while moored in dock (Forward or Reverse ) under load about 2/3 of max speed -my tachometer is not calibrated yer so I do not trust what RPM there is black smoke from exhaust . While on lower load it´s fine with some noticable white smoke mixed with cooling water ( this is fresh hater cooling system) What can couse this?
- old diesel fuel
-to large propeller with engine 30 HP and Hurth 125 transmission- to much load on engine
-because is tied up to dock give more load than underway?
- injectors??
Any other suggestions
Any help wil be graatly appeciated.
I am running out of the ideas how to solve 2 above problems
