I don´t think you need special Volvo tools to time the engine/pump.
You need a metric dial indicator with extensions and holders, such as:

Wes,
I´m no expert about engine insides, but since no one has responded, I´ll throw out an idea based just on running a 42 and then a 43 for 15 years.

It sounds like a blocked stop solenoid valve on the injection pump. When hot it is blocked in closed position and when it cools down the blocking point is released and then when actuated it can open...... |

Thanks Steako. Unfortunately, I already tried switching the stop solenoids between engines, but the problem didn´t follow the solenoid. I was hopeful about this idea though. |

You sound like you have a fuel control that must have electrical input to open and allow the engine to run. ie. lose power and the engine will quit or not start.
Many engines are the reverse...... |

Unplug it and see if it stops. If not, clutch plate has fused onto drive plate. New clutch needed. |

You could try Volpar in Santa Clara CA. They have a huge number of VP parts and manuals, including diesel manuals. The manuals are surprisingly slim, and being from Volvo, quite expensive.

The Volvo manuals are very expensive and are not user friendly. They were written for people that have been through the Volvo engine and transmission school. Volvo has no consideration for D.I.Y.ers. |

As long as you are sure the leak isn´t into the bilge then the most likely place for a leak to occur is in the heat exchanger. The turbo, coolant cooled, is another place. Check these to make sure ..... |

Where turbo mounts on exhaust manifold is another place to leak. Seen them drip from the bottom of that joint, but only at high power. |

Shawn,
If coolant loss is in heat exchanger you will not find salt there. A loss means it´s going the other way i.e. coolant leaking into the raw water bundles. If it were the other way you would be ..... |
