TOPIC DETAIL
Topic:  2 Engines, No Crank???

HI everyone...I have a year 2000 Luhrs, with twin 3116 Cats. I am the original owner...engines and starter motors have run flawlessly since new...Last week, changed oil on both sides and started both motors up..They started up instantaneously and with out incident.

This week went to start and 1. when the ignition switches to on, we have fuel solenoid engagement, and 2 when the switch is put to "Start" there is just a minor solenoid noise, but no crank...The engine sequencing noise is exactly the same on both engines.

I intially thought that maybe it was my neutral safety switch, but they should be indepent of on another on the lport and starboard side. MY halon system would shut down tboth fuel solenoids , but they seem to activate and to be sure to take this out of the equation, I put the system in "override". Still no crank

I have had two ";pros" come and look and they each feel that " according to the book" I lost both starter motors which have run flawlessly over the past nine years, at exactly the same time. Both pros agree that this is highly improbable.

So in any event, I have started to remove the starter on the port side. First question, the starter bolts ( 3 of them) have been removed, but the starter does not want to budge..(I am used to having the starter on my Chevy just fall out). Is there some technique needed to pull this starter out of the block????

Second, does anyone have any idea of some defect that would commonly affect both starters??? and keep both of them from cranking.....Batteries are good, they were tested under load.

The strangest thing is that the crank sequence noise is exactly the same on both sides. We do not have one starter acting one way and the other starter behaving differently.

your input would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom
