My tachometer drive (or whatever it may be called) which is mounted on the rear end of the injection pump shaft is loose:
It moves easily along the shaft axis from the engine housing out to about 1..... |

Rich, change all fuel filters, then go over the entire fuel line system and check and tighten all hose connections, and try it again.Testing the injectors at this point is a total waste of money.

That sounds like a fuel issue to me. Either getting air in the system someplace OR the fuel is clogging either in a filter or a fitting, or a line is collapsing. Might even be the fuel tank vent being..... |

Thanks for all the replies!
The engine ran steady the whole time. It just juped up 100 rpm for a second or two a few times. I was on a calm sea at the time.

I lost fuel due to clogs 3 times when I had my old Perkins. Every time the engine went HIGHER in rpm before it died. |

Yep, my Perkins will start surging up about 200 rpms when my filters start showing dirty on the vacuum gauge. New Racors has always fixed it. |

Check around the throttle shaft where it goes into the injection pump. If the seal is shot you will find that the new seal is made from different material due to low sulphur fuel. |

Yup, could be the L.S. fuel. Could also be just age. All seals harden and lose their ability to conform to the surface they ride on and of course they wear.

Well no aftercooler then it is a 165. IF the turbo was added to a non turbo designed engine, you could be in trouble as they may have different pistons, different heat treating on some of the internal..... |
