Find the solenoid coil wire on the starter solenoid. Crank engine. Check if volts are present on coil terminal. There should not once start button is released.

Do you have 100% CMD wiring for all stations? New boat or repower? Any signs of moisture anyplace? Are you Smartcraft Version 1.0, 2.2 or 2.2 DTS?

thanks Ski. I found a replacement starter this am, so will go down and install it tomorrow or the next day. Then I will take the Fluke meter to it until I can identify the problem. I keep thinking ..... |

Gary - Remove the cover on the back of the integral starter solenoid, remove the contacts and look at the surfaces. The Dodge/Cummins trucks would often have problems with their starters sticking on ..... |

I´m not sure if this will help you but I had a similar problem with a Perkins starter a while back. Once you engaged the starter, it would stay engaged to the flywheel and still attemptin to..... |

yours seems like a different design than mine. I can´t tell if the ring your touching does the same thing as mine did. As best as I could tell with mine, the way the solenoid/bendix assembly worked ..... |

Gary How are your batteries? I´ve had 4 or 5 starters stick on in different machines due to weak batteries. I don´t know exactly why, maybe since the voltage is lower the increased amps cause the cont..... |

Excellent troubleshooting.........Just so you know, (which I am sure you do), I doubt you´d ever find a Cummins Distributor tech that would be able to do this.. Want a job?

Yes, you did point out the mashed wire problem to me (two years ago).... I am not affected.

Read thru the attached a couple of times.. Ignore my notes..This is current as they describe their system.....Notice EVERY Alternator OPTION the factory offers but one (24v) is case gounded...... |

I have taken the inlet bronze pipe to the salt water pump off about 6 times and even replaced the o´ring but still has a small leak. As a last resort I put teflon pipe compound on the joint but still..... |
